Undergraduate student assistants support the operational and lab needs of the Institute for People and Technology within the . Each student assistant is assigned a primary area within the department. All student assistants assist with events and space operations as needed. 

The Institute for People and Technology (IPaT) student assistant program offers hands-on experience supporting cutting-edge research, labs, and events at the intersection of people and technologies. Working across Technology Square Research Building, Coda Building, and Aware Home, student assistants keep IPaT’s operations running smoothly – solving IT problems, maintaining labs, and organizing signature events that showcase emerging innovation. There are two tracks for student assistants: 1) research operations assistant and 2) lab assistants. Student assistants on either track may cross-train depending on scheduling and capacity. 

The Research Operations Assistant track focuses on technical troubleshooting, AV setup, and IT coordination and is ideal for students interested in IT, systems support, or digital infrastructure. IPaT research operations assistants may be trained to support additional interdisciplinary research institutes across the Georgia Tech research enterprise.

Responsibilities include: 

• Triage IT issues among faculty, staff, and users
• Setup, maintain, and manage audio-visual equipment for events and lab spaces
• Maintain loaner computer equipment
• Aid staff with computer software and hardware
• Maintain documentation of equipment status and repairs

The Lab Assistant track supports inventory, equipment maintenance and fabrication assistance and is ideal for students interested in prototyping, engineering, or human-centered design.

Responsibilities include:

• Troubleshoot issues with equipment (could include minor repairs or adjustments)
• Maintain inventory of lending library items, Prototyping Lab and/or Craft Lab
• Building, debugging, and maintaining demonstrations
• Develop and update signage related to space policies, practices, and usage
• Facilitate orientation for new users in the Prototyping and Craft Labs

Both Research Operations and Lab Assistants will aid in space and operations management and event management. Space and operations management responsibilities include assisting with the daily organization of IPaT spaces including checking mail, cleaning kitchen space, etc., working on various office projects assigned by IPaT staff, running errands/deliveries around campus, managing IPaT reservable spaces including conference rooms and collaboration spaces. Event management responsibilities include setting up spaces according to event needs, facilitating organization of caterers and other vendors, assisting with post-event cleanup, and troubleshooting event logistics.

Students will be trained on the job for specific tasks. 

Undergraduate Student Minimum Qualifications

• Be enrolled full-time at Georgia Tech in good academic standing
• Strong problem solving mindset and willingness to learn
• Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical audiences
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively

Undergraduate Preferred Skills

• Experience organizing or supporting events
• Familiarity with A/V equipment, computer hardware/software troubleshooting, or IT systems (for research operations assistants)
• Ability to safely use common power and hand tools, 3D printers, or crafting equipment (for lab assistant)

Hours/Schedule: 10-20 hours/week; hours are flexible based on student schedule
